Fwd: This Thursday, 6/21: The Politics of Islam in America - New America Foundation in New York City

Dear Friends,

I hope you can join us this Thursday, 6:30p-8p, for a fascinating discussion on the politics of Islam in America.  It'll take place at New America Foundation, in our New York City space.  I'll be moderating a panel featuring Zeba Khan, Linda Sarsour, and Jennifer Bryson.

The event is free and open to the public, but requires an RSVP.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Also, do share with your friends and networks--this is an important discussion to have, and the voices we have represent trends and ideas that are not heard from nearly often enough.

Warmly,

Young, well-educated, and ethnically diverse, many American Muslims have achieved the American Dream. But in the post-9/11 world, Muslims face a complex political reality: extremists aim to obscure that diversity in a cloud of fundamentalism, while fear of law enforcement surveillance and rising Islamophobia from mainstream political actors has more and more Muslims uncertain about their place in the American political landscape.

In this election year, we'll explore how Islam has become a political football, what Muslims themselves are doing about it, and how major political parties should engage this segment of the electorate. Speakers will focus on New York's 800,000 strong Muslim community, how American Muslims' views of President Obama have evolved, and whether the right could be a more natural home for American Muslims than the left.
