Muslim Advocates and 110+ Groups Demand Federal Investigation of NYPD

Muslim Advocates Organizes Major Push for U.S. Department of Justice Investigation of NYPD

On Monday, Muslim Advocates, working in coalition with over 110 civil rights, faith, community and civic groups, sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder demanding an immediate investigation of the NYPD's surveillance practices for violations of the constitutional rights of American Muslims.  Since August 2011, the Associated Press has released a series of reports, based on the NYPD's own documents, about NYPD intelligence gathering programs that specifically targeted Muslims throughout the Northeast.  Based on information released to date, they have spied and collected intelligence on approximately 350 mosques, schools, businesses, and individuals, without any apparent evidence of criminal activity.

The letter to the Attorney General comes after New York Mayor Bloomberg and New York Attorney General Schneiderman's refusal to look into the matter, several months after 34 members of Congress asked Holder for an investigation, and after scores of organizations asked the Department of Justice to investigate the NYPD.

The diversity of the organizations represented in the letter sent a clear message that law enforcement's targeting of religious communities is an issue that concerns all Americans.  The signatories to the letter included: Center for Constitutional Rights, NAACP-NY, Occupy Wall Street, Interfaith Alliance, Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee, Asian Law Caucus, NY State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Alliance for Justice, Sikh Coalition, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.
